Expenditure categories are buckets against which you capture expenditure. For example, your motor vehicle may be insured, you have to purchase fuel for it, and you may have an installment finance payment to make on the vehicle. All of these could be allocated to the expenditure category called "Vehicles". Using expenditure categories helps you to determine for example what percentage of your expenditure goes to taxes, vehicles and housing.
